Susie Dent has delivered a perfect putdown for certain England fans with her word of the day.

The Countdown star is no stranger to shade and she was on form as ever with a scathing burn aimed at a section of football fans who have disgraced themselves in the wake of the men’s national team’s Euro 2020 final loss to Italy.

She seemed tweeted: ‘Word of the day is “unasinous” (17th century): united in stupidity. From the Latin for “one ass”.’

Although she didn’t directly state the target of her jibe, plenty of followers on Twitter filled in the blanks, including many referencing a viral image of one individual seen firing a flare out of his backside.

England players have been subjected to disgusting racist abuse following the penalty shoot-out heartbreak.

England were beaten 3-2 on penalties by Italy after the two teams could not be separated over 120 minutes, the game finishing 1-1 before the spot-kicks.

Three England stars missed from the spot – Marcus RashfordJadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka – have faced hideous abuse on social media, which has been widely condemned by the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Piers Morgan and more.

Rio urged social media platforms to do more to protect people, as he said: ‘Hiding behind the safety blanket that is social media platforms these disgusting people can continually abuse our England players knowing that they are safe to be able to stay anonymous.’

He added: ‘Social media companies please can we come together in creating a way to protect people on your platforms please…. Our young heroes need your attention too! @Twitter @instagram @Facebook.’

And Prince William, who was in the stands last night, commented: ‘I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match.

‘It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour. It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable. W.’

The FA has spoken out against the response from some fans towards the team, insisting that the racist abuse will not be tolerated.

The Euro 2020 final – the furthest the men’s team have reached in a major competition since the 1966 World Cup heroics – was also marred by violent scenes in London and at Wembley Stadium itself before and after the game.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed 49 people were arrested and 19 injured across various incidents linked to the final, including disorder at a fan park in Trafalgar Square.
